PBGVHRF Health Initiatives

The Health & Rescue Foundation of PBGVCA is deeply committed to advancing the health and well-being of the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen through targeted health initiatives, research funding, education, and proactive programs. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we partner closely with the AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) and leading veterinary researchers to address breed-specific concerns while supporting broader canine health advancements.

Key Health Initiatives

  • Epilepsy Research — In collaboration with the AKC Canine Health Foundation, we funded a study in 2025 led by Dr. Karen Muñana (DVM, MS, DACVIM), Professor of Veterinary Neurology at NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. This project examines the prevalence and clinical features of idiopathic epilepsy (a chronic seizure disorder) in PBGVs across North America. PBGV owners with dogs that have experienced seizures—or seizure-free dogs—are invited to participate to help build critical data for better understanding, diagnosis, and management of this condition. Learn more and get involved at our dedicated epilepsy page.
  • Ongoing Reimbursements for Health Testing — We offer reimbursement programs to encourage proactive health screening. Owners and breeders can apply for partial or full reimbursements on qualifying tests (such as POAG Screening, eye certifications, genetic screenings, or other recommended diagnostics). This initiative helps reduce financial barriers to early detection and prevention of breed-relevant issues.
  • Broader Research Support — Through annual reviews of the CHF Research Grants Portfolio, we selectively fund projects addressing PBGV-specific health concerns (including conditions like pancreatitis, lens luxation, glaucoma, and idiopathic epilepsy) as well as multi-breed issues that impact our dogs (e.g., tick-borne diseases, pyometra, Brucellosis, and cancer). Our grants support groundbreaking work that leads to improved diagnostics, treatments, genetic insights, and overall breed preservation.
  • Education and Prevention — We promote awareness and education on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of PBGV health issues through resources, breeder/owner outreach, and partnerships. By funding DNA banking, genetic diversity studies, and other tools, we help ensure future generations of healthy, happy PBGVs.

All donations to the Foundation directly support these initiatives—funding research grants, reimbursements, educational materials, and rescue efforts when needed. Transparency is core to our mission: see our full Reports & Statements for meeting minutes, annual reports, motion logs, and financials.
